Keep Your Child's Brain From Draining!

Posted on 07-16-2015 | Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of North Flower Mound

Believe it or not, we’re already halfway through the summer! Your school age child may not want to be reminded of that reality, but it’s a good idea to keep an eye on how your child maintains an active and engaged mind during the summer months. Studies have shown many kids losing up to 2 to 3 months of math and reading skills over the summer, due to a phenomenon known as “Summer Brain Drain.”1

The good news is “Summer Brain Drain” does not have to be inevitable! There are several ways your child can conquer summer fun and still retain the knowledge received during the school year. The most crucial ingredient to help your child retain school learning is to make sure your child remains active during the summer. When your child’s day lacks any type of engaging or interactive activities, it is easy to lose the knowledge acquired during the school year. It’s a good idea for parents to provide opportunities to grow and challenge their child’s critical thinking and problem solving skills.

For young children, it’s important to allow them plenty of active playtime during the summer. It may appear to be counter-intuitive to let your child engage in play that is not directly educational but, at early stages of learning, play is one of the best ways to reinforce concepts. Be sure your child is staying active during playtime. TV watching in moderation is completely normal and acceptable but take your child outside and encourage some free exploration and playtime away from electronics to activate the imagination!

As your child gets older, it becomes more important to demonstrate the connection between school knowledge and everyday life. When a child sees how information is connected to what they experience, the information goes from just information to useful, relevant knowledge! At any stage of learning, be creative with your children allowing time for exploring new hobbies, going out for dessert or coffee and talking about what they enjoy or don’t enjoy about school. The more you get to know your children, the more you’ll know how to engage them and fill some of their summer vacation with enjoyable and educational activities.
