Flower Mound, TX Childcare: Protecting Your Family From the Flu

Posted on 01-20-2016 | Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of North Flower Mound

Parents across the nation are bracing themselves for flu season. With the short days and long nights, the winter months can be difficult to endure, but when your child gets sick, it’s much worse! Unfortunately, children are particularly susceptible to contracting the flu since they are so good at sharing germs. The good news is there are practical ways you can guard you and your family from catching a cold or contracting the flu.

First, teach your children the proper way to cover their mouths when coughing or sneezing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have noted that the flu is most effectively spread from person to person contact. Instructing your child to cough into their elbow plays a huge part in keeping any virus from spreading rapidly. For younger children this will be a difficult skill to remember but making it into a fun game of “catching your germs in your sleeve” may help to reinforce this habit.

Second, proper hand-washing techniques can also help your family stay healthy. Warm water and soap is the best combination to kill harmful bacteria on your hands but if that’s not available, be sure to always have anti-bacterial hand wipes for young infants and toddlers, or hand sanitizer for older school-age children. Make sure your child understands the most important times to wash their hands such as before meals and after potty breaks.

Lastly, if you or your child does end up getting sick please do not leave your home. It can be frustrating to manage a sick child at home but the best way to prevent a virus from spreading is to keep it contained. One sick child in a classroom directly impacts the other children and adults he/she comes into contact with.

At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of North Flower Mound, our primary concern is the safety of every child in our care. In addition to always operating in a secure building, we also implement tools such as the ZONO sanitizing machine to help combat the spread of germs. Every day, the toys and furniture your young infant, toddler, and preschooler uses are disinfected inside the machine. We would love to give you a free tour or of our facility and show you all the ways we create a safe and engaging learning environment for your child. Contact us, today!
